A Fashion Trend for fall that you might love! Socks with loafers. We wore them back in the 1980s thinking we were bringing them back from the 50s and now we are wearing them again! Wearing loafers with no socks (at any time of year) has sort of been the trend, but socks with loafers are so much more comfortable and practical, so I’ll be embracing it happily! Will you? I’m so happy to be joining my friends Cindy, Mary Ann, and a few friends to share our fall fashion over 50 trends we are seeing and maybe even embracing!
I’ve seen the trend all over Pinterest too! Many of the looks are so similar to what I wore in college. Ralph Lauren chambray shirts, cardigans, and blazers. The only thing that is missing is a pair of khakis. I can’t quite go there, yet!

I think what I love about wearing socks with loafers…I mean aside from the comfort aspect, is that the look is timeless and ageless. I happen to be illustrating all younger people wearing them (because this is what I was seeing on Pinterest), but I would feel very age-appropriate wearing any of these looks as shown above.
Shop My Closet (well…almost)
For this post since we are talking about a trend that seems to be back, I thought it would be fun to shop my closet for those items that I could never quite part with, and now, they are back in style. I wore Ralph Lauren chambray and Oxford stripe shirts with my initials on the cuff all through college. I recently grabbed a few Oxford shirts from a donation bag in Patrick’s closet of old clothes that no longer fit him. They are so similar to the shirts I wore in college and turns out they are an almost perfect fit for me! I doubt Patrick will even notice, but I can’t wait to be sitting across the table from him at dinner in NYC next time and him saying…” Is that my shirt?” haha
A white Shirt
Everyone should have a few white shirts in their closet. I have several white linen shirts and one beautiful shirt from Crimson in Paris. Shop owner, Linda Wright calls this The Classic White Shirt or your only white shirt. The shirts from Crimson are beautifully made in France from the finest Suisse cotton. They will even hand embroider your initials on the shirt. I chose white on white, but next time I may choose red so the initials stand out. It is the most exquisite white shirt. I wash on delicate by itself, hang dry and hand press. I wear it all year long.
My Uniform – A white shirt and jeans
Add a black blazer and an oversized bandana
I have always had a small wardrobe. I prefer to buy quality pieces that will last for many years and I don’t mind wearing the same thing over and over. One look I will be wearing is my Classic White Shirt from Crimson, jeans, and loafers with socks. I could add a jacket, a wrap or a cardigan, but I almost start with “my uniform” – a black or white t-shirt or a white shirt. It makes life so easy and I always feel great!
A few other Basics I pulled from my closet
- A well fitting black blazer – I bought mine at J.Crew several years ago and had it tailored slightly. It’s an Italian wool that can be worn almost year round. It’s my go to for travel. This one is similar and it now comes in regular, petite and tall.
- Jeans – I would rather have three pairs of jeans I love than 100 pairs of jeans I’m not too sure about. I purchased two pairs of these jeans. One in regular length and one tall so that I can roll them up.
- A Black Bag – Mine is (you guessed it) old. It’s a Philip Lim bag from 2005. I can wear it as an everyday bag or turn the pocket in when wearing it and it feels slightly more formal. I don’t know why, but that’s my little trick. The side pocket seems to make to more casual, but it’s perfect for a phone! This one is similar from Madwell.
- Camouflage Pants – I like to have a pair in my closet to wear with a blazer or just a white shirt. I can wear with a sweatshirt or a t-shirt or my one new piece I purchased this year, a denim shirt-jacket. Also great with a jean jacket too!
- Gucci Brixton Loafers – Expensive as hell, but worth it. I wear them year round (expect when it rains) and not only are they comfortable, but they make me feel like a million bucks! See what I mean…worth it!
- Paul Green Loafers – This is the shoe I wear when there’s a threat of rain or snow. I used to wear them with no show socks so of course my ankles were cold, so excited to be bringing them out this year knowing I can wear real socks with them!
- Vans – I love a pair of Vans. They are cheap, but they are fun. Enough said.
- Chambray Shirt, Oxford Stripe and the Classic White Shirt – This is pretty much all I need, plus my black and white t-shirts!
- An oversized bandana – So easy to wear this with everything!
- A Striped T-Shirt is great for layering under everything.
shirt Jacket (What are your thoughts on these)?
I have had my eye on several shirt-jackets. I find many run so large, that I look even larger when wearing one. I’m already 5’10” so I’m really not going for looking larger! I did find this one on sale at Nordstrom and instantly loved it! I’m wearing a medium, so keep that in mind. I love the fit and I’ve already worn it with khaki green shorts several times as a lightweight jacket over a t-shirt. I think I’ll wear it a lot this fall and winter.
A Glen Plaid Blazer from J.Crew
The Sommerset Blazer in Glen Plaid English Wool is one of those pieces that can be worn with everything from jeans to a dress. I even loved the idea of wearing it as a suit, but the pants are back-ordered. It’s a blazer that runs fairly generous and I’m wondering if it’s made that we so you can layer a hooded sweatshirt under it. That’s what I plan to do when it gets a bit colder.
Today I’m wearing it over a white t-shirt, high-rise “90s Classic Straight Leg Jeans (that I love), and Gucci Brixton loafers with socks.
